Past

The people of Yaninde are magical beings. It just not everyone possesses the ability to use their magic. It is unclear why this is, but over the eons countless different theories have been debated. The most prominent one is the idea that some people have a blockage that keeps them from accessing or utilizing their magic to its full potential. It is believed that this blockage didn't always exist, and everyone was capable of using their magic. It is unclear what changed, and once again there are many different theories--or rather lore about the reasons behind this change. The most common theme within these stories is the idea that the blockage was created by the thirst of power. Some say that wytches themselves created the blockage as a means of limiting the powers of their rival, or perhaps it was a method of punishment for those who had committed horrendous crimes. Other say that during their quest for more power some wytches accessed forbidden magics, and the blockage was created as a mean to limit their access to these magics. Some of these stories say it was done to protect them while others claim to control them and given the cost of using the magic many lean towards believing the latter.

It is said that before the blockage everyone could use their magic as much and as often as they wanted, but afterwards, the use of magic had a clear cost. Through, the exact price isn't known, but a common belief is that it costs pieces of one's soul. What is known is that those who use magic are changed with every spell they cast. They lose their humanity. Their sense of self. And because of this cost there have been many attempts to limit or even forbid the use of magic. None of these attempts have been successful. This is surprising to some as those who are incapable of using magics far outnumbers those who can, and this led them to believe that the attempts to limit or forbid the use of magic should meet little to no oppositions. The reality is those with access to their magics are the ruling class within majority of the nations of Yaninde, and the few nations they are not they very well might be. And these attempts to limit or forbid the use of magic are just another means for one wytch to gain the upper hand over their rivals, and for many wytches the idea of getting an edge over others is the driving force behind them developing their magics.

Most wytches never develop their magics to any significant level because the cost claims them before they do. However, there are wytches who have found other ways to pay the price and have increased their magical capabilities greatly or even indefinitely. Qiana's father was one such wytch. He used other people's life force not only pay the price of using his magic, but to extend his own lifespan. It is unclear how much, but some believe he was alive when the blockage first came to be and the things, he has done over the course of his existence have been done in an attempt to regain the magics that had been lost when the blockage was created. Even if Qiana's father had not been alive during the creation of the blockage it would not come as a surprise if he wasn't trying to gain access to the magic that existed before this period. He was a man renowned for his insatiable thirst for power and would undoubtedly see this other type of magic as more power. It was this thirst of power that led to him abducting and having children with countless women over his long existence.

Through, for the people of her father's nation the abduction of women was not frowned upon. In fact, it might be said that it was not only encouraged but expected. His people believed that a marriage was only binding if the bride had been abducted first. However, Qiana's father didn't marry every woman he abducted. It is unclear why he married one woman and not another. It wasn't because those who became wives were more fertile than those who didn't nor was it because the wives had more sons. Many of the wives had little to no children and only one ever gave birth to a son. Being born a legitimate offspring of Qiana's father granted them certain liberties, or perhaps it might be better said that it allowed their father to see them as a different tool than his illegitimate ones. When they are younger it might be difficult for the legitimate children to notice the difference of how they are treated versus how the illegitimate children are treated. All they noticed is they are forced to endure unspeakable torment for their father's quest for power. However, as they age the undeniable truth becomes clear. They are not as disposable as the others. Make no mistake their father would not mourn their passing, but he put more effort into preserving his legitimate children over his illegitimate ones.

Another difference was legitimate children were allowed to remain within the care of their mother for longer and their mothers still had an active role within their lives even after they were removed from her care. Many of the illegitimate children had little to no memories of their mother due to their last encounter with their mother having occurred when they were extremely young. The one thing Qiana can say without a doubt she is grateful towards her father for is the fact he didn't separate her from her mother like he did his illegitimate children. She knows how easy he could have done such a thing. She like all his children didn't understand the reason behind the decision. Perhaps, it was a reward for being considered worthy enough to be a wife. Whatever the reason Qiana attributes this as the reason she has any sense of humanity. She has no doubt of the monster she would be if it wasn't for her mother's gentle influence. She realizes that when push comes to shove her mother did little to shield her from her father's cruelty, but she had provided her comfort during vital moments that would have broken Qiana if she had not received them. It wasn't just during those moments that Qiana believes her mother influence held it sway over her. It was in every moment they had together.

Qiana regarded her mother as the most remarkable being she knew who deposit cruelty and torment that her kidnapper turned husband forced her to endure she never harbored any ill feeling towards him. Growing up she never understood her mother's forgiveness towards her father. Even now she finds herself hard pressed to grasp it. Outraged one day, she had confronted her mother about it. She had screamed at her, demanded to know why she didn't hate him, called her all sort of nasty things for her perceived weakness. Her mother endured this onslaught for the entirety of Qiana's outburst. Smugly Qiana had thought she had successfully shamed her, but it became clear that she didn't interrupt Qiana's outburst because she knew Qiana needed to express the frustration and anger that had been building up inside of her, and she also needed someone to tell her that it was okay to feel the way she did even indirectly. After a few moments Qiana's mother told her something that made Qiana believe her mother's lack of hatred was an open act of defiance against her father. It was within that moment she decided just how remarkable her mother was and within the same breath realized she couldn't follow within her footstep. She was incapable of smothering the hatred she felt towards her father that was growing inside of her with each passing day.

It wasn't long after this conversation that Qiana lost her mother's influence. Her mother died giving birth to Qiana's brother. As heart wrenching as this news was, her mother's passing did not come as a complete surprise to Qiana. From what she understood, her mother found extreme difficulties with Qiana both during her pregnancy with her and when she gave birth, and she found the same difficulties with all the pregnancies that occurred between her birth and her brother's. She wanted to hate her brother for taking her mother away from her. It wasn't just that she thought that being their father's only legitimate son would somehow free him from all the cruelty that she had to endure, but the very moment she laid eyes upon him any sense of anger and hatred she felt towards him vanished. She still believed that the fact he was the only legitimate son would somehow shield him from their father's cruelty. Given how their father treated illegitimate sons versus illegitimate daughters the logic made perfect sense, but it didn't take long or her to realize that wasn't the case and there was no doubt within Qiana's mind that it had something to do with her brother's magic.

Nezha, for that what her brother was named, magic did not seem to come with the same price that Qiana or everyone else did. Their father believes he possess the magic they had lost with the creation of the blockage and for this he pushed Nezha in ways he never pushed his other children. Qiana tried her best to shield her brother against their father's cruelty. She did her best to be as her mother had been to her to her brother. However, it was clear the impact her father was having upon Nezha. There were times she thought about killing her own father, but she didn't muster up the courage to do such a thing until her brother made the attempt himself. Nezha was a boy of ten when he made the attempt. She knew right away that it had been a foolish act. Her brother magic was powerful, but extremely unpolished. There was no doubt that their father was outraged by the attempt and fearing the retribution her brother would have to endure Qiana attempts to finish the job.

However, she realized that she would be no more successful than her brother. Their father had a way of evading death. He wasn't just difficult to kill, but he had a way of coming back even if someone managed to make a successful attempt upon his life. Over the years, Qiana discovered how her father managed such a feat. He had created untold number of phylacteries over the course of his existence. Phylacteries are objects that a wytch embedded a piece of their soul into and would allow them to escape death if their body happened to perish. It made this possible because instead of the soul passing into the realm of the dead the soul sought out the pieces that had been sealed away within the phylacteries. The soul always sought to be whole when it passed into the afterlife and would not pass until all the missing pieces were collected. Through, this practice did come with a downfall. Wytches could use the phylacteries of others to control them both during their lives and after their death. It was for this reason wytches took great care to hide their phylacteries as most were incapable of creating more than one. The more phylacteries one could create the harder they were to control.

Knowing what her father was capable of Qiana took her brother and fled. She had no idea how long they had before their father managed to bring himself back, but she knew there was nowhere upon Yaninde they could hide their father wouldn't be able to find them. The only chance they had to hide from their father for any extended period of time was on a different world. Luckily, she knew in theory how to travel to other worlds. She had never made the attempt before. She had been told that the cost was extremely high, and most wytches who made the attempt ended up losing their entire soul. She didn't care if that was the price she had to pay. Keeping Nezha safe was worth any price. She racked her brain for worlds that she thought would be the best to hide within. She knew that only world that could hide them from their father for any meaningful period of time were one with little to no magic, but going into those worlds were more challenging as they cost more to do so. She, also, knew she didn't have any time to do any research to make sure what she remembered matched what had been written.

Deciding that she had no other options beside saying screw it she leapt into a world she believed was the perfect candidate, and sure enough it was. This world was very different than the one she had been born into. It was a world without magic, but more surprising was her spell had not cost her what she feared it would. She would still be able to look after her brother. There was no doubt within her mind that their father would not stop looking for them until he found them, but until than she would provide Nezha with the best life possible. She would do everything within her powers to heal Nezha from the damage that their father caused him.

Present

For six years, Qiana was free to raise her brother in the manner he deserved and marveled how much he had grown over the years. She did her best to keep her brother from noticing she was constantly looking over her shoulder for their father. She isn't foolish enough to believe she was always successful, but she believed that she succeeded enough that Nezha wasn't constantly being riddled with the same fear she was. However, one day her fear was realized. Their father found them. Nezha was luckily out with some friends, but their father made it clear that he knew that it was only a matter of time before Nezha returned despite Qiana's attempt to convince him that she had severed ties with him. Their father told Qiana that he knew she was incapable of doing such a thing because she loved her brother too much. He spoke of making up lost time, and while he never specifically stated how he was going to punish them for the attempt they made upon him there was no doubt within her mind that he was. More than that she feared all the progress her brother had made being erased if he returned to their father care. Nezha had healed a great deal over the last six years, and she would be damned if she would stand by and watch those wounds reopen.

It was for this reason she decided to attack her father, but she didn't kill him. She knew he would just come back if she did that and considering he knew where they were he would be able to find them again as soon as he did. Yes, there was the option of just fleeing to another world, but she did not want Nezha to know just how close they had come to being dragged back. No, instead, she sealed their father away within his own body and stuffed that body within her closet and that is where she kept him ever since. Every so often she recast the spell to prevent him from breaking through, and for six more years she has successfully managed to keep her father imprisoned in this manner.
